Driving in the early morning hours can be quite dangerous, even though traffic is generally light compared to rush hour. The danger is particularly acute when someone needs to pull off to the shoulder of the road, as one driver hauling a boat had to do at approximately 4 a.m. this morning. Tragically, another vehicle crashed into the car, the boat and two people parked on the shoulder and two people were killed as a result.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“Here’s what happened, according to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Pat Santangelo:
A Ford F-250, towing a boat, pulled over to the left shoulder.
About the same time, a red car stopped in front of the truck and got out to help.
“We don’t know if that person knew the driver of the truck or if it’s a good Samaritan,” Santangelo said.
The two were underneath the boat when a Chevy Malibu lost control, hitting the back of the boat.
The boat fell onto the men, killing one.
“The second individual, according to a witness, started screaming hysterically, ran to the red vehicle and fled the scene,” Santangelo said. “We don’t know why.”
The crash killed the 22-year-old driver of the Chevy Malibu. A woman in the car was taken by helicopter to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.”
Police also found marijuana and a bag of white powder near the Chevy.
